Sento, old Japanese-style public bath ”Ume-no-Yu"
(Followed by English translation)
I love a hot bath. Actually, soaking in a hot bath is one of my favorite things to do after my right shoulder surgery.
Sadly, many sento, old Japanese-style public baths, were closed, and not so many of them remain these days.
However, my husband and I found that kind of old sento the other day. It is not so far from our house. It takes about ten minutes by car.
Recently, we had a chance to visit Ume-no-yu for the first time.
There were old-style shoeboxes at the entrance. Their keys are made of wood.
The entrance to the public bath was a smoked glass sliding door.
When I opened it, I saw the Bandai, the watchtower seated on an elevated chair to keep watch of the belongings for both the male and female rooms. The male and female rooms are right next to each other and separated only by a wall.
When I was a child, the main purpose of the watcher was to keep our belongings safe from thieves.
We always made sure to keep the schedule of the watcher in mind when planning our trip to the public bath. We only went there when the watcher was the madam, not the master.
There were many small rocks in the dressing room. You can put your belongings and variables in there.
They also have traditional Japanese sento-style bamboo baskets. I put my clothes in there and covered them with a towel, just as I used to do when I was a child.
Inside of bathroom, they had two big bathtubs. One was green, which contained olive oil and some minerals, and another was a jacuzzi bubble bath.
I really enjoyed both.
After I got out of the bath, I needed to dry my hair.
They had two hairdryers in front of a big mirror. When you insert 20 yen into the slit, you can use it for a couple of minutes.
We enjoyed traditional Japanese-style sento to the full. The jacuzzi was perfect for massaging my back and shoulder.
We will definitely visit there again!
